There are new additions to the list of star players participating in St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy! Apart from the best women’s doubles team in the world – Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza, Ana Ivanovic and Belinda Bencic are also among the participants of the tournament.
Despite belonging to different generations, both of these players are very well known in the tennis world. Ana Ivanovic, 28 years old, is a recognized talent with a unique style characterized by a great offensive technique from the baseline. Russian tennis fans are very familiar with the Serb: she has participated at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow more than once and in the Fed Cup Russia vs Serbia semifinal in 2012 where Ana played a great part in the Serbian team’s victory. Ana had a consistent season which resulted in the 16thplace in the world ranking. This past season she was in the final in Brisbane (lost to Maria Sharapova) and reached semifinals in Monterrey, Beijing and at Roland Garros where she defeated, among others, Ekaterina Makarova from Russia and Elina Svitolina from Ukraine.
Ana Ivanovic, who is one of the favorites to win the upcoming tournament in St. Petersburg, will surely enjoy exploring St. Petersburg – the city where she has wanted to play for a long time, as she once admitted in Moscow. Now her wish can finally be granted – thanks to a new spot on the world tennis map – St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy. Ivanovic is a great fan of ballet. On one of her visits to Moscow she went to see the Nutcracker at the Bolshoi Theatre and will probably want to visit the Mariinsky Theatre as well and see some other gems of the city on the banks of the Neva river.
As for Belinda Bencic, she is deservedly considered a rising star of the WTA Tour. Many even think this prodigy has already become a player who belongs to the tennis elite. Her career was indeed a fast one. In March of 2011, just after she turned 14 the junior player first participated in the ITF tournaments and reached the quarterfinal of a $10.000 tournament in Finland. In 2012 she won two events of the same category in Egypt and, after getting a wild card in Luxembourg, played her first main draw match at a WTA tournament. Belinda finished 212th in the WTA ranking and the 1st in the junior ranking in 2013 winning junior Roland Garros and Wimbledon. In 2014 she had a breakthrough in Charleston where – taking into account qualification matches – she had 6 straight wins and reached the semifinal. She then reached the quarterfinal at U.S. Open defeating two Top-10 players (Angelique Kerber and Jelena Jankovic) and played in her first final in Tianjin, China. In 2015 the 18 year old Swiss had a few more reasons to be proud of herself after winning in Eastbourne and Toronto and raising to the 12th place of the world ranking in August – her career high. What’s more, in the semifinal in Toronto she was able to defeat Serena Williams and … Ana Ivanovic in the preceding round.
A possible final Ivanovic – Bencic could become a real treat for the tennis fans watching St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy. We remind you that the tournament is taking place from Feb. 8 till Feb. 14 on Krestovsky Island at the Concert and Sports Complex Sibur Arena and the Tennis Center Dynamo.
