Score-wise the match was very easy for you. Was it really easy?
It’s never easy, especially against a big champion like Jelena. She obviously didn’t feel well in the first set, but in the second set she really started to play better, so I had to play a very consistent match. I’m happy that I won in 2 sets and the match was a bit longer than an hour, as it saved me some energy for the rest of the tournament.
You got into the main draw off the qualifications. Sometimes it’s a good thing (to play in the qualification), as you have time to get used to the court and conditions here, on the other hand you had already several clashes and can be out of breath for the upcoming matches. What is your opinion on that?
It really depends on what kind of matches you had in qualifications. I had 2 matches with 2 sets in both of them, so it gave me a lot of confidence. Than I had two days off, because I actually qualified on Sunday and I had to play on Wednesday, so I had time to recover. The qualification was definitely good for me. It gave me a lot of confidence and I could adapt to the surface here. I think it’s a good thing so far, but we will see how it goes tomorrow.
You started to work with Sandra Zaniewska. Could you comment on working with her?
Very well. Sandra is a very nice person. She is a very good coach, too. It is the first time actually I am working with someone who is younger than me (laughter). It is going very well. We have a very nice relationship and we are diffidently working in the right direction.
You mentioned on the court that you like to come back to St. Petersburg, what makes this tournament so appealing to you? Why do you like to come back here?
The city is very impressive. It is like a princess city and I really like the architecture of St. Petersburg but I think the most impressive thing is how the tournament makes everything to make players feel comfortable. Everything is just perfect: the food is great. Facilities are amazing and that is why I think the draw of St. Petersburg is always so tough and strong because all the players love this tournament.
How did you like the gala-dinner on Monday evening?
It was fun. Dancing, singing … I had a lot of fun. I go to the party every year and it used to be more extravagant but this year it was perfect and I enjoyed it a lot.
