On Sunday, February 9, the final matches of the quallies at St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2020 were played with three Russians reaching the main draw. Anastasia Potapova from Saratov outplayed the French Pauline Parmentier 6/3, 6/1, she will take on another winner of the qualification – the Russian Liudmila Samsonova. Samsonova got the better of Timea Babos (5/7, 6/3, 6/2). The third Russian Vitalia Diatchenko came over her compatriot Natalia Vikhlyantseva 7/6(3), 6/4. Vitalia commented on her match: «When you play qualification matches, especially when you come from Australia, it is important to feel the court and get your rhythm, find your game. The most important thing was to find my rhythm in the game, because yesterday’s match was terrible for me. The most important thing is to win. Because you understand that in the next match you can improve your game, you understand what you need to work on. I expected the match to be difficult. We are friends with Natasha off court, but today we played against each other for the first time. We both play aggressive tennis, our game style is similar in some aspects». In R1 she will face the Greek Maria Sakkari, the 6th seed of St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2020.
The French Alize Cornet beat the Russian Vera Zvonareva over a close match (6/3, 6/4). Cornet will vie for a spot in the R2 with Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia. Another tennis player from France, Oceane Dodin, reached the main draw where she will take on Viktoria Kuzmova from Slovakia.
The last tennis player to make it into the main draw was Kristie Ahn from the USA as she prevailed over Tereza Martincova 7/6(1), 6/4. Ahn it to square off with last year’s runner-up Donna Vekic from Croatia.
