The Russian Vera Zvonareva, who was handed a wild card from the organizers of the tournament into the main draw beat in R1 the Australian Arina Rodionova in straight sets 6/1, 6/3. Zvonareva clearly dominated in the opening set, the second one was closer, the opponents were fighting for every point. Rodionova was even leading in the second set but then Zvonareva managed to turn the tide and won.
«Arina is not an easy opponent as this surface suits her game style, she was using lots of slices. I had to find the balance between the attack and patience. I think, at the beginning of the 2nd set I was a little bit in a hurry and I started to lose but then I composed myself, found my rhythm and won», – the winner said in her on-court interview.
In the next round she will take on the third seed Fiona Ferro from France.
“Fiona is an amazing player. I never watch the draw, so I didn’t know whom I am to play next. Now I am going to recover well. And I am sure it will be an interesting challenge for me”, – Vera added.
