The Russian Vera Zvonareva, who was handed a wild card from the organizers of St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2021, sealed a victory over the 3rd seed French Fiona Ferro in the deciding tie break of the 3rd set – 6/7(6), 7/6, 7/6(2). The match duration was 3 hrs and 10 mins, it is a new record of the St. Pete’s tournament. The clash between Russian and French became the 5th longest match on the WTA tour of the season.
After the match Zvonareva noticed: “It was tough to find my range in the first set. It was the first time I played Ferro so it took me some time to adopt to her game style at the beginning. That is why I am glad I managed to win. I feel myself physically well and I am ready to play my evening doubles match and also I have a great partner Elena Vesnina who will definitely help me!”, – said Vera smiling.
Vera Zvonareva became the first quarterfinalist of the tournament; her next round opponent will be the winner of the match Anastasia Gasanova v. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
